Renascedd – Guinea
Commercial activities such as logging for timber and firewood, slash-and-burn farming practices and large-scale mining activities have cut deep into Guinean Woodlands.
Project Overview
About
Commercial activities such as logging for timber and firewood, slash-and-burn farming practices and large-scale mining activities have cut deep into Guinean Woodlands. Such unsustainable practices have exacerbated the existing threat of climate change. These accelerate processes of soil erosion and desertification leading to soil becoming infertile and unable to foster healthy ecosystems.
To reverse the trend of land degradation, our reforestation efforts are carried out in multiple districts in Guinea. Our local partners are working towards conserving nature and rather than planting trees for firewood and timber, agroforestry trees are planted to provide communities with fruits and nuts that can be harvested over decades to come.
The reforestation projects are mobilizing and empowering locals in continental and coastal areas to combat land degradation, regenerate forests and teach sustainable practices. The project specifically emphasizes the planting of agroforestry trees such as mango, avocado and lemon trees in the districts of Kindia, Mamou and Boké. Our local planting partner also rehabilitates mangroves along coastlines and waterways to restore aquatic ecosystems. The vision is to revive the vitality of the forests that fringe the rivers. The NGO provides jobs to locals and creates awareness through workshops specifically designed for schools.
